MadrugaBTW – UNIDROIT Research Scholarship

The MadrugaBTW-UNIDROIT Research Scholarship is granted by the UNIDROIT Internship and Research Scholarship Programme; a programme from The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT).

The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT). is an independent intergovernmental Organisation with its seat in Rome. Its purpose is to study needs and methods for modernising, harmonising and co-ordinating private and in particular commercial law as between States and groups of States and to formulate uniform law instruments, principles and rules to achieve those objectives.

Set up in 1926 as an auxiliary organ of the League of Nations, the Institute was, following the demise of the League, re-established in 1940 on the basis of a multilateral agreement.

UNIDROIT Internship and Research Scholarship Programme.

UNIDROIT grants research scholarships to a limited number of high-performing post-graduate law students, lawyers, academics and government officials to undertake research in the UNIDROIT library. Over the last 25 years, the Research Scholarship Programme has hosted nearly 400 researchers from 65 countries, generally under partial funding, for an average period of two months.

The Programme is funded by extra-budgetary contributions. The number of scholarships awarded each year depends on the available funding. UNIDROIT appeals to potential sponsors to support the Scholarship Programme.

University scholars and researchers, law students as well as Government officials and members of the legal profession from all over the world may apply to undertake research at the UNIDROIT Library as visiting scholars or researchers. Unlike the scholarship programme, visiting scholars and researchers must self-fund their research, however applicants may use their approval from UNIDROIT as visiting scholars or researchers to support their requests to potential sponsors to finance their stay in Rome.
